Sage green nursery wallpaper: soft greens for any baby

For a sage green nursery, start with Sage green leaf (fine white leaf outlines on sage green). Animal alphabet (soft green accents), Teddy Bear Striped (a sage palette), Ocean life (blues and greens) and Woodland nursery (leafy wreaths on warm beige) bring in green in smaller amounts, and Neutral Nursery Cloud and Clouds sit quietly beside it. All of them work for any baby. A 6-foot accent wall on an 8-foot ceiling takes three 108-inch panels, $360 for our kids' designs. Order a $15 sample first, because green shifts with the light.

1. Choosing a sage green nursery.

Green is a calm nursery color that does not point to a gender, and sage is the softest version of it. The catch is that green changes more than most colors as the day goes on. Sage can look gray at noon and yellow-green under a night-feed lamp, so the shade on your screen is only a starting point.

  • Pick the green by the light. A north-facing room pulls green toward gray. A sunny room pulls it toward yellow. Look at a sample in the room it will live in.
  • Pair it with what you already have. White furniture, light wood and a touch of blush all sit well with sage. Keep the textiles simple and let the wall carry the color.
  • Paper one wall. Usually the crib wall. Sage on all four walls turns a small room into a cave.

Every design here works for any baby, and all but the first come from our kids’ collections. The nursery peel-and-stick wallpaper page shows the whole range.

2. The sage wallpaper.

One design in our range is sage itself, and it comes from our botanical peel-and-stick wallpaper page rather than the kids’ collections:

  • Sage green leaf: fine white leaf outlines on sage green. A grown-up pattern with no characters in it, so it works in a nursery and stays when the room becomes a toddler’s or a big kid’s. It comes in the same 30-inch panels, and the 108- and 120-inch heights cost the same as in the table below.

Leaf outlines make a good backdrop for the things babies come with: a wooden crib, a plush toy, a framed print. If you want a sage nursery that still feels like a baby’s room, add one of the animal designs below on a second wall or in the bedding. See the Sage green leaf sample for the color in your own light.

3. Kids’ designs with green in them.

If you want less green on the wall, these bring it in a little at a time. None of them is a solid green wall.

  • Animal alphabet: a pastel animal alphabet with soft green accents. It suits a nursery that turns into a learning wall later. See the alphabet nursery guide.
  • Teddy Bear Striped: teddy bears on gentle beige stripes in a sage palette, for a warmer, more playful take on sage.
  • Ocean life: watercolor fish and sea plants in easy blues and greens. The most colorful of the group. See the ocean nursery guide.
  • Woodland nursery: woodland creatures gathered in leafy wreaths on a warm beige ground. It does not read green on its own, but the leaves make it a natural neighbor for sage decor. See the woodland nursery guide.
  • Neutral Nursery Cloud: watercolor clouds in warm beige and olive tones, for a room that wants a green-leaning neutral.
  • Clouds: rounded white clouds on a soft gray ground. A cool companion that lets a sage rug or curtain stand out.

For more beige, olive and sage together, see the boho nursery guide. To sort designs by palette, see the gender-neutral nursery guide.

4. Plan the wall and the panels.

Every kids’ design comes in 30-inch-wide panels in nine heights, priced $90 to $180 per panel. Divide the wall width by 30 and round up for the panel count. Add 4 inches to the wall height for trim and alignment, then choose the shortest panel height that covers it.

5. Start with a $15 sample.

With green, a sample is the whole point. Order one of each finalist from our samples page, or straight from a design: Sage green leaf sample, Animal alphabet sample, Teddy Bear Striped sample or Ocean life sample. Each is $15 with free US shipping.

Questions

What is the best sage green wallpaper for a nursery?

Sage green leaf is the sage-colored option: fine white leaf outlines on a sage green ground. For green that shows up in smaller amounts, Animal alphabet has soft green accents, Teddy Bear Striped uses a sage palette and Ocean life mixes blues and greens.

Does sage green work for a boy or a girl nursery?

Sage reads as neither pink nor blue, so it suits any baby. It also sits easily beside white, light wood and blush, which makes it simple to change the bedding later without touching the wall.

Why does green look different on my wall than on my screen?

Greens lean yellow in warm lamplight and gray or blue in cool daylight, and screens vary. Order a $15 sample, tape it on the wall you plan to paper and look at it in the morning, at midday and by the lamp you use for night feeds.

How many panels does a sage accent wall take?

Divide the wall width in inches by 30 and round up. A 6-foot wall on an 8-foot ceiling takes three 108-inch panels at $120 each, $360 for our kids' designs. A 10-foot wall on a 9-foot ceiling takes four 120-inch panels, $500.
