Gray nursery wallpaper: soft gray, warm gray and what to pair it with
For a gray nursery, choose between Clouds (rounded white clouds on a soft gray ground), Stars (small gray stars scattered across white), Moon and bunny nursery (rabbits on crescent moons in soft gray and white), Watercolor solar system (smiling planets and stars on warm gray) and Dandelion flower (small yellow bursts on a gray ground). All are soft grays; we have no charcoal kids' design. Pair gray with blush, sage or mustard through Pink boho, Teddy Bear Striped or Dandelion flower. A 5-foot accent wall on an 8-foot ceiling takes two 108-inch panels, $240 for our kids' designs. Order a $15 sample of each finalist first.
1. Choosing a gray nursery.
Gray is the easiest nursery color to live with and the easiest to get wrong. It suits any baby and goes with nearly any furniture, but a gray wall can read cold, flat or heavy depending on its undertone and the light in the room. Two decisions do most of the work: warm or cool, and how much pattern.
- Warm gray leans toward beige or taupe (sometimes called greige). It feels cozy and sits well with wood and cream.
- Cool gray leans toward blue. It feels crisp and quiet, and it can turn chilly in a room with little sun.
- Light in the room moves the color. North-facing light tends to cool a gray; south-facing light tends to warm it. Lamps at night shift it again. This is the best reason to see a sample on your own wall.
Honest note on range: every gray design we carry for kids is a soft or light gray. We do not have a charcoal, slate or dark gray nursery wallpaper. If you want a deep, dramatic wall, see the black and white nursery guide for the crisper end of monochrome. For other ways to sort by mood, see the gender-neutral nursery guide. Every design here comes from our kids’ collections.
2. The gray designs.
These five are gray by their own catalog descriptions. Our nursery peel and stick wallpaper page shows them beside the rest of the range.
- Clouds: rounded white clouds drifting across a soft gray ground. The most wall-covering gray, hushed and even.
- Stars: small gray stars scattered evenly across white. From across the room it reads as a light texture, the lightest touch of gray here.
- Moon and bunny nursery: rabbits resting on crescent moons with stars, in soft gray and white. The one with a story to it.
- Watercolor solar system: smiling planets and stars in a loose watercolor solar system on warm gray. The warm-gray option, with more going on.
- Dandelion flower: small yellow dandelion-like bursts spaced across a gray ground. Gray with a built-in accent; see the next section.
The catalog does not say which of these lean warm and which lean cool, apart from the solar system’s warm gray, so judge undertone from a sample rather than a photo. For the star-and-moon theme in more depth, see the star and moon nursery wallpaper page.
3. Pairing gray with a color.
A gray wall is a good backdrop, and a single second color keeps it from going flat. Wood does the same job: a natural crib, shelf or rocker warms any gray. The designs below are not gray, and we do not call them that.
- Blush: Pink boho puts white botanical line drawings on a soft blush-pink ground. Use it on a second wall, or keep gray on the wall and bring blush in through bedding. The pink nursery guide goes further.
- Sage: Teddy Bear Striped is teddy bears on gentle beige stripes in a sage palette, a calm partner for gray textiles. The sage green nursery guide covers the rest.
- Mustard: Dandelion flower already pairs gray with yellow. To echo it, add a mustard throw or a small framed print.
- Blue: gray and blue are close neighbors, so keep the blue small. See the blue nursery guide.
Whatever you pair, limit the pattern to one accent wall and leave the others plain. Texture matters as much as color: a knit blanket, a woven basket or a sheepskin keeps gray from looking flat.
4. Plan the wall and the panels.
Every kids’ design comes in 30-inch-wide panels in nine heights, priced $90 to $180 per panel. Divide the wall width by 30 and round up for the panel count. Add 4 inches to the wall height for trim and alignment, then choose the shortest panel height that covers it.
| Wall | Panels across | Panel height | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 ft wide, 8 ft high (60 × 96 in) | 60 ÷ 30 = 2 | 108 in | 2 × $120 = $240 |
| 9 ft wide, 9 ft high (108 × 108 in) | 108 ÷ 30 = 3.6, so 4 | 120 in | 4 × $125 = $500 |
Prices are before tax, with free US shipping. The nursery wallpaper calculator does the same math for your own wall. If you rent or may redo the room later, read the removal guide: we have not published our own removal tests, so test a sample on your paint.
5. Start with a $15 sample.
Gray is the color that most changes between a screen and your wall, so sample before you commit. Order a sample of each finalist from our samples page, or straight from a design: Clouds sample, Stars sample, Moon and bunny nursery sample or Watercolor solar system sample. Each is $15 with free US shipping.
To compare several quiet designs at once, the Calm nursery pack puts three together:

Questions
What is the best gray wallpaper for a nursery?
Five of our kids' designs are gray by the catalog's own description. Clouds is rounded white clouds on a soft gray ground. Stars is small gray stars scattered across white. Moon and bunny nursery is rabbits on crescent moons in soft gray and white. Watercolor solar system is smiling planets and stars on warm gray. Dandelion flower is small yellow bursts on a gray ground. All of them are soft grays; we have no charcoal or dark gray kids' design.
Is gray nursery wallpaper too cold or flat?
It can be, especially a cool gray in a north-facing room. Warm it with natural wood, cream or oat textiles and one accent color, and choose a pattern with some character rather than a solid wall. Order a $15 sample and look at it in morning light and under your lamp before you decide.
What color goes with a gray nursery?
Blush pink, sage green and mustard yellow are the easy ones. Pink boho brings a soft blush ground, Teddy Bear Striped brings a sage palette, and Dandelion flower sets small yellow bursts on gray. Keep gray as the wall and let the second color arrive in a blanket, a rug or a print.
How many panels does a gray accent wall take?
Divide the wall width in inches by 30 and round up. A 5-foot wall on an 8-foot ceiling takes two 108-inch panels at $120 each, $240 for our kids' designs. A 9-foot wall on a 9-foot ceiling takes four 120-inch panels, $500.
