Nursery accent wall ideas

Paper one wall, usually the one behind the crib. Count 30-inch panels across the width and round up: on an 8-foot ceiling, a 10-foot wall takes four 108-inch panels ($480 for our kids' designs) and a 12-foot wall takes five ($600). For a lighter touch, paper only the lower wall with 48-inch panels at $90 each. Calm stripes like Teddy Bear Striped give the wall structure; small repeats like Stars read as texture. Order a $15 sample before you commit.

1. Choose the wall.

One papered wall gives a nursery most of its character. It keeps the job to an afternoon, the cost to a handful of panels, and the rest of the room free for furniture, shelves and art.

  • Behind the crib. The usual choice: it frames the crib and it is the wall you see from the doorway.
  • Facing the door. If the crib sits on a side wall, the wall you see first when you walk in makes the room feel finished from the hallway.
  • Behind the reading chair. In a larger room, a papered corner wall gives night feeds and story time their own spot.

A wall without windows or doors is the simplest to install. A window does not change the panel count: panels run over openings and are trimmed around them. Sketch outlets and switches before you start so you know where to trim.

2. Full height: panel counts for common walls.

WallJoy panels are 30 inches wide and come in nine heights. Divide the wall width in inches by 30 and round up. Add 4 inches to the wall height for trim and alignment, then take the shortest panel that covers it. On a standard 8-foot (96-inch) ceiling that is the 108-inch panel, $120 for our kids’ designs.

10 ft (120 in)40 in$480
11 ft (132 in)518 in$600
12 ft (144 in)56 in$600

Widths always round up to whole panels, so walls from 91 to 120 inches wide all take four. With a 9-foot ceiling, the same widths need 120-inch panels at $125 each. 3. A lower-wall accent.

Papering only the lower part of a wall, below a chair rail or a painted line, gives the nursery pattern at a child’s eye level and leaves the top of the wall plain. It suits rooms with a strong ceiling light or tall windows, and it uses less material.

Our shortest panels are 48 inches tall. With the 4-inch allowance they cover a lower wall up to 44 inches high. A 10-foot wall papered to 36 inches takes four 48-inch panels at $90 each, $360 for our kids’ designs.

Lower walls work best with designs that read well up close: Animal alphabet, Bunny nursery or Scandinavian floral nursery. Pick a paint for the upper wall from the lightest color in the pattern.

4. Calm stripes.

Pinterest Predicts 2026 names a circus-inspired trend it calls FunHaus (see the Pinterest Predicts 2026 announcement). In a nursery, the part to borrow is the stripe, kept in a calm palette so it stays restful.

Teddy Bear Striped does that: teddy bears on gentle beige stripes in a sage palette. The stripes give the wall structure, and the bears give a toddler something to find later. Pair it with plain walls in a pale tone taken from the paper, so the stripe stays the one strong element.

Stripes make an uneven ceiling line easier to notice. Measure the height at both ends of the wall and use the taller reading when you choose a panel height.

5. Texture or picture.

Decide what you want the wall to do from the doorway. Small, even repeats read as texture from across the room; larger motifs read as pictures to look at.

Texture is easier to live with in a small room; pictures give a toddler something to point at later. Our ideas by age guide follows that shift from nursery to big kid, and the gender-neutral guide sorts the quiet designs by palette. Or browse every kids’ design, grouped by stage.

6. Start with a $15 sample.

An accent wall is the first thing anyone sees in the room, so check the design in the room before you order panels. Order samples from our samples page, or straight from a design: Teddy Bear Striped sample, Stars sample, Multicolor safari animals sample or Animal alphabet sample. Each is $15 with free US shipping.

  • Tape the sample on the wall you plan to paper, at the height the pattern will sit.
  • Look at it from the doorway and from the crib side, in daylight and by lamplight.
  • Keep it up for a few days before you decide.

Questions

Which wall should be the nursery accent wall?

Usually the wall behind the crib, because it is the one you see from the doorway and from the changing table. If that wall has a window or door, it still works: panels run over openings and are trimmed around them, so they do not change the panel count.

How many panels does a 10-foot nursery accent wall take?

Four. WallJoy panels are 30 inches wide, and 120 inches divided by 30 is exactly 4. On an 8-foot ceiling those are 108-inch panels at $120 each for our kids' designs, $480 for the wall.

Can I wallpaper only the lower half of a nursery wall?

Yes. Our shortest panels are 48 inches tall, which cover a lower wall up to 44 inches once the 4-inch trim allowance is included. A 10-foot lower wall takes four 48-inch panels at $90 each, $360 for our kids' designs.
