Black and white nursery wallpaper: crisp and soft monochrome

For a black and white nursery, choose between Bunny nursery (black-and-white woodland rabbits and small botanical motifs), Scandinavian floral nursery (small black line-drawn flowers and stems spaced across white) and Fairytale map paintable (a black-and-white map made to be colored in). For a gentler monochrome, Moon and bunny nursery is rabbits on crescent moons in soft gray and white. We do not have a bold graphic black-and-white kids' design, so bring stronger contrast in through frames, a rug or furniture. A 5-foot accent wall on an 8-foot ceiling takes two 108-inch panels, $240 for our kids' designs. Order a $15 sample of each finalist first.

1. Choosing a black and white nursery.

Black and white is a decision about contrast more than color. A crisp monochrome wall, with dark lines on white, looks graphic and clean. A soft one, in gray and white, looks hushed. Both suit any baby, and both leave the room free to change with blankets, art and toys. For the grown-up version, with peonies and palms, see the black and white botanical wallpaper guide; this guide is about nurseries.

  • Crisp monochrome uses black or charcoal lines on white. It reads strongest in a bright room and goes with almost any furniture.
  • Soft monochrome uses light gray with white. It is the calmer choice for a small or dim room.
  • Scale changes the feel. Small, widely spaced drawings look light; large or dense ones fill a wall quickly.

One thing to know before you fall for a photo: a small black-and-white pattern that looks tidy on a phone screen can look busier across a whole wall, because the repeat multiplies. That is a good reason to see a sample on your own wall first. Every design here comes from our kids’ collections.

2. The black-and-white designs.

These are the three kids’ designs whose catalog descriptions are black-and-white, and there is no bold or graphic one among them: each is a line drawing or a small repeat. Our nursery peel and stick wallpaper page shows them beside the rest of the range.

  • Bunny nursery: black-and-white woodland rabbits and small botanical motifs. The most characterful of the three, with something to look at.
  • Scandinavian floral nursery: small black line-drawn flowers and stems spaced across white. The lightest of the three on a wall.
  • Fairytale map paintable: a black-and-white fairytale map made to be colored in by little artists. Better suited to a toddler or big-kid room than a newborn’s.

For the bunny theme in more depth, see the bunny nursery guide.

3. Softer monochrome and warm companions.

These are not black-and-white, and we do not call them that. They are soft gray and white repeats for a gentler monochrome, plus one warm pattern to take the chill off a mostly gray room:

  • Moon and bunny nursery: rabbits resting on crescent moons with stars, in soft gray and white. The softest monochrome pick.
  • Stars: small gray stars scattered evenly across white. From across the room it reads as a light texture.
  • Clouds: rounded white clouds drifting across a soft gray ground, for a cool, quiet wall.
  • Neutral Nursery Cloud: watercolor clouds in warm beige and olive tones, for a second wall or a room that needs warmth.

To keep a monochrome room from feeling stark, let natural wood, white furniture and warm textiles do the softening: a cream or oat blanket, a woven basket, a wood crib or shelf. Limit the pattern to one accent wall and leave the other three plain. For more ways to sort designs, see the gender-neutral nursery guide; for a softer, all-gray room, the gray nursery guide; for color-led rooms, the sage green, blue and pink nursery guides.

4. Plan the wall and the panels.

Every kids’ design comes in 30-inch-wide panels in nine heights, priced $90 to $180 per panel. Divide the wall width by 30 and round up for the panel count. Add 4 inches to the wall height for trim and alignment, then choose the shortest panel height that covers it.

5 ft wide, 8 ft high (60 × 96 in)60 ÷ 30 = 2108 in2 × $120 = $240
9 ft wide, 9 ft high (108 × 108 in)108 ÷ 30 = 3.6, so 4120 in4 × $125 = $500

Prices are before tax, with free US shipping. The nursery wallpaper calculator does the same math for your own wall. Line drawings and stripes show a crooked corner or a wall that is out of plumb, so measure the height at both ends. If you rent or may redo the room later, read the removal guide: we have not published our own removal tests, so test a sample on your paint.

5. Start with a $15 sample.

Black-and-white patterns are the ones that most change between screen and wall: line weight, spacing and the white of the ground all look different at full scale. Order a sample of each finalist from our samples page, or straight from a design: Bunny nursery sample, Scandinavian floral nursery sample, Moon and bunny nursery sample or Stars sample. Each is $15 with free US shipping.

To compare several quiet monochrome designs at once, the Calm nursery pack puts three together:

Questions

What is the best black and white wallpaper for a nursery?

Three of our kids' designs are black-and-white by the catalog's own description. Bunny nursery is black-and-white woodland rabbits and small botanical motifs. Scandinavian floral nursery is small black line-drawn flowers and stems spaced across white. Fairytale map paintable is a black-and-white map made to be colored in. For a gentler monochrome, Moon and bunny nursery is rabbits on crescent moons in soft gray and white.

Do you have a bold, graphic black and white nursery wallpaper?

Not in the kids' range. Every black-and-white design is a line drawing or a small repeat, and the rest of the monochrome picks are soft gray. For a bolder look, keep the wall quiet and bring contrast in through a black frame, a striped rug or a dark crib. Order a $15 sample to see how the lines read on your wall.

Will black and white feel too stark for a nursery?

It can on a big wall in a dark room, and pattern scale matters: small, widely spaced line drawings read lighter than dense ones. Warm it with natural wood, white furniture, and oatmeal or cream textiles, and consider one accent wall rather than the whole room. Check a sample in daylight and under your night-feed lamp.

How many panels does a black and white accent wall take?

Divide the wall width in inches by 30 and round up. A 5-foot wall on an 8-foot ceiling takes two 108-inch panels at $120 each, $240 for our kids' designs. A 9-foot wall on a 9-foot ceiling takes four 120-inch panels, $500.
