How many wallpaper panels do I need?
Divide the wall width in inches by 30 and round up. An 8-foot (96-inch) wall takes 4 panels, and a 10-foot (120-inch) wall takes exactly 4. For the height, add 4 inches to the tallest reading and choose the shortest panel that covers it: a standard 8-foot wall takes 108-inch panels. The chart below covers walls 6 to 14 feet wide.
1. The panel rule.
Every WallJoy design comes in panels 30 inches wide, in nine heights from 48 to 192 inches. Two numbers decide the order:
- Panels across. Divide the widest width reading in inches by 30 and round up to a whole panel. Any fraction, however small, needs one more panel.
- Panel height. Add 4 inches to the tallest height reading, then choose the shortest panel that covers it.
This is the same math our calculator and Room Kit estimator use. Our measuring guide explains how to take the width and height readings.
2. Panels for walls 6 to 14 feet wide.
| Wall width | Width ÷ 30 | Panels | Trimmed off | Price at 108 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft (72 in) | 2.4 | 3 | 18 in | $360 |
| 7 ft (84 in) | 2.8 | 3 | 6 in | $360 |
| 8 ft (96 in) | 3.2 | 4 | 24 in | $480 |
| 9 ft (108 in) | 3.6 | 4 | 12 in | $480 |
| 10 ft (120 in) | 4 | 4 | 0 in | $480 |
| 11 ft (132 in) | 4.4 | 5 | 18 in | $600 |
| 12 ft (144 in) | 4.8 | 5 | 6 in | $600 |
| 13 ft (156 in) | 5.2 | 6 | 24 in | $720 |
| 14 ft (168 in) | 5.6 | 6 | 12 in | $720 |
Prices are before tax, with free US shipping, and apply to every design at the 108-inch height. Walls at exact multiples of 30 inches, like 10 feet, leave nothing to spare, so measure carefully: a 10-foot wall that is really 120¼ inches wide needs 5 panels.
3. The trim allowance.
We add 4 inches to the wall height before choosing a panel. That extra length is what lets you line the panel up at the ceiling and trim a clean edge at the baseboard, even when the ceiling is not level. We do not add extra width: the panel count already rounds up, and the spare width on the last panel is trimmed at the corner.
That is why a 96-inch wall does not take 96-inch panels. With the allowance it needs 100 inches, so it takes 108-inch panels.
4. Walls taller than 96 inches.
Measure the height on the left and the right, and in the middle if the ceiling or trim is uneven, then use the tallest reading. For a sloped ceiling, size the panels for the highest point and trim along the slope.
| Wall height | With 4-inch allowance | Panel height | Price per panel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 in) | 100 in | 108 in | $120 |
| 8 ft 6 in (102 in) | 106 in | 108 in | $120 |
| 9 ft (108 in) | 112 in | 120 in | $125 |
| 10 ft (120 in) | 124 in | 144 in | $135 |
| 12 ft (144 in) | 148 in | 168 in | $150–$160 |

5. Use the calculator for your own walls.
The wallpaper calculator runs this math for you. Enter each wall in feet and inches and it shows the panel count, panel height and price. It was built for nursery walls, but the panel count and height are the same for every design. To see the panel counts as totals, read how much a nursery accent wall costs.

Questions
How many wallpaper panels do I need for an 8 ft wall?
4. An 8-foot wall is 96 inches wide, and 96 ÷ 30 = 3.2, which rounds up to 4 panels. They cover 120 inches, so 24 inches are trimmed off the last panel.
How many wallpaper panels do I need for a 10 ft wall?
4. A 10-foot wall is 120 inches wide, exactly 4 panels of 30 inches, with nothing to spare. Measure at the top and bottom: if any reading is over 120 inches, you need 5.
Do I subtract windows and doors?
No. Count panels across the full width of the wall. Panels run over windows, doors and outlets and are trimmed around them, so openings do not change the count.
What panel height do I need for a 9 ft ceiling?
Add the 4-inch allowance to 108 inches for 112, then choose the shortest panel that covers it: 120 inches.
What if my wall is taller than the tallest panel?
Our tallest panels are 192 inches, which cover walls up to 188 inches with the trim allowance. For a taller wall, split it into two runs or contact us and we'll help plan it.
